Apia – Samoa
The driver of the vehicle involved in the crash was taken to hospital
On Wednesday afternoon this week (Samoa), a traffic accident occurred in Fountain Village, Savaii Island, where a pickup truck crashed into a family’s house.
Police Commissioner Auapaau Logitino Filipo confirmed mid-week that the driver was taken to hospital with injuries from the accident, but no charges have been laid.
The circumstances leading up to the accident were understood, but despite the circulation of photos and people at the time of the accident online, no one was home and the cause of the accident was uncertain. People from the village flocked to the scene.
At the time of reporting by the Central Samoa Observer, the driver was taken to Mototua Hospital in critical condition. The man is estimated to be between 50 and 55 years old and the Minister of Health has asked the public to help find the driver’s family.
The past of dengue babies
According to the report of the Samoan Minister of Health, the number of hospitalizations due to the dengue fever epidemic has decreased after more than two weeks since it began in October 2023. For this disease, there have been no deaths in the hospital.
Most people who contract the disease are aged between 20 and 29, but they tend to come from villages in the northwest of Upolu and around Apia.
Actions taken by the Minister of Health to eradicate the disease include cleaning communities and fumigating the interiors of schools, hotels, hospitals and other centres in collaboration with provincial constituent assemblies.
However, the Minister of Health and other partners are working hard to monitor this and other diseases to protect Samoa and its people as well as visitors.
Allied Government Private Minister arrives in Samoa
Last Wednesday evening (in Samoa), the Senior UN Secretary arrived in Samoa and met with the Prime Minister of Samoa, His Excellency Fiame Naomi Mata’afa.
Mr António Guterres was officially welcomed in a series of meetings and began yesterday with a meeting with Fiame to discuss climate change, international leadership and other issues affecting Samoa.
It is also discussing the government and the country’s preparations for the upcoming convention in October.
Guterres expressed his gratitude for the meeting and the Samoan Government. He also recognized the Samoan government leaders and their hard work on issues such as climate change.
The Minister of Natural Industries and Environment, the Honourable Toeolesulusulu Cedric Schuster, played a key role in the meeting with Guterres, expressing his gratitude to the UN representative for visiting Samoa and stressing the importance of this meeting.
Greteles’ visit to Samoa is part of his tour of the Pacific Islands as he prepares for the Pacific Islands Leaders Summit in Tonga next week.
Guterres also visited Arapata Province, which was devastated by the 2009 tsunami and continued sea level rise.
Two firefighters were taken to hospital
An incident in Lepea village (Samoa) on Monday afternoon left two firefighters dead after one of the firefighters quickly returned but was stopped because his body was burning and he was suffering from smoke inhalation.
Fire Service chief Tanuwasa Petone Mauga confirmed that the fire at the Laipia house was caused by burning garbage next to the house.
As the investigation continues, it is focusing on the safety of the fire brigade that responded to the blaze that day.
Two firefighters suffered partial burns, the commissioner reported. The firefighters’ names have not yet been released.
Tanuvasa said the men were unaware their bodies were affected by the fire until they were swapped with other firefighters. This happens often in similar disasters. Firefighters put their energy and spirit into performing their duties and they forget their bodies are affected by the heat of the fire and physical fatigue.
The commissioner said this week’s incident highlighted the importance of addressing these issues so they don’t happen again.
When Samoa Observer staff went to the house on Wednesday, they saw crews cleaning up the house, but that was not to begin until Friday.
The incident also highlights the importance of being careful when burning rubbish around homes, especially during this period of hot, dry weather.
