Phnom Penh: Prince Hun Sen, President of the Senate of the Kingdom of Cambodia, told Senator and Chairman of Japan’s Komeito Party, Mr. Natsuo Yamaguchi, that democracy and human rights must go hand in hand with the rule of law in order to maintain peace.

On July 16, 2024, when allowing Japanese Senator and Komeito Party Chairman Natsuo Yamaguchi to pay a courtesy visit to Prince Hun Sen, Prince Hun Sen insisted on the principle of peace first, because without peace, there would be no democracy and no human rights.

The Senate President went on to say that many countries only shout for democracy and human rights regardless of the peace factors in the country and that it is impossible to see the whole forest from one perspective or from one tree.

“Peace is priceless, because of peace we have everything we have today,” he said.

Samdech Techo went on to say that it is clear that Japan’s assistance in mine clearance is not possible without peace because the more mines we clear, the more they will increase.

“In order to maintain peace, democracy and human rights must go hand in hand with the rule of law,” he said. “Therefore, only by maintaining a balance between these three factors can the country have real development and peace.”

Mr. Yamaguchi expressed his gratitude to Samdech Techo and clearly recorded his wise views on the absolute value of peace, which is the only way to achieve mine clearance, state development and rule of law.
