Artist Liang Jiewen will hold an exhibition of paintings in the style of fine brushwork at the “Fantasia 10” gallery in the historic district of San Lázaro until the 30th of this month. “Recanto Íntimo” is an initiative of the Association for the Promotion of Creative Industries of the Diocese of San Lázaro
The exhibition, titled “Recanto Íntimo – Gongbi Paintings by Liang Jiewen”, is a new exhibition of the artist’s works at the “Fantasia 10” gallery in the São Lázaro neighborhood. The initiative of the Associação Promotor para as Indústrias Criativas of the parish of São Lázaro will last until the 30th of this month and presents “beautiful works with healing power in serene silk” using the Gongbi technique, a traditional Chinese painting form. Characterized by high precision and rich details, it began to develop during the Tang Dynasty.
“Recanto Íntimo” refers to the artist’s studio, which is called “Xintianshe” in Chinese. “She works day and night to cultivate her inner space in deep darkness,” a statement from the organization revealed. Here, the artist creates “small brushwork” and displays “the charm of the Song Dynasty, using mineral colors to create quaint silk paintings.”
The paintings result from “the artist’s spontaneous depiction of scenes and objects from everyday life, integrated into a meticulously detailed painterly world,” giving the works an “antique feel.”
This creative process becomes a solace for the artist himself, “calming anxiety, removing distractions, removing superficial glamour, allowing a state of self-reflection”, leading to “tranquility and inner peace”, it reads.
Artists and curators
Liang Jiewen is an artist and curator. He holds a PhD in Fine Arts from the Chinese Academy of Arts and is an assistant professor at the Faculty of Humanities and Arts at the Macau University of Science and Technology.
The artist stressed in the same note that “it takes mental fortitude to achieve the fine detail of each line or brushstroke, as well as time and patience to add layer after layer of pigment and color to achieve ‘thickness'” “Lightness” is a characteristic of meticulous painting styles such as gongbi painting.
For Liang Jiewen, this traditional painting style allows him to “calm his mind, clear his thoughts, cultivate his inner space, find ‘inner peace’ amidst the hustle and bustle of the city, and achieve personal healing”.
Liang Jiewen is an expert in fine brushwork, with the theme of his doctoral thesis being “Identifying the Cuiyun Image as Painting”, and has carried out a lot of curatorial and teaching work in higher education and in several associations. He is part of it, such as the China Artists Association. He is also a director of the Macau Artists Association, the Macau Chinese Calligraphers and Painters Yu Yun Association, and the vice president of the Macau Youth Art Association.
