Safaricom offers millions in aid to victims of anti-financial bill protests, including rent and phone bills

Safaricom has announced a multi-million shilling support package for Kenyans affected by the recent protests against the 2024 Finance Bill.

Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa announced at Kenyatta National Hospital that the telecommunications company will allocate K500,000 to provide assistive devices to those injured in the protests.

Ndegwa also said Safaricom will issue smartphones and airtime to users who have lost their phones, as well as provide three months of food to affected users and one year of rent to those in extreme situations.

Additionally, Ndegwa donated Ksh15 million to Kenyatta National Hospital on behalf of Safaricom and M-PESA Foundation to support protesters admitted to the hospital.

The telecommunications company also donated Ksh10 million to the hospital’s Disaster Response Centre and an additional Ksh500,000 to support those injured and admitted to the hospital.

Safaricom, through its M-Pesa Foundation, will also organise medical camps in disaster-affected areas such as Githula and Rongai from July 6, 2024.

“Our foundation always stands with people, especially in times of need. We are pleased to provide structured support to hospitals during this emergency, including improving infrastructure and helping patients recover.” Ndegwa pointed out.

In addition, according to #GenZforGenZ The program will mobilize its Gen Z employees and other organizations to form teams of volunteers. These teams will lead community outreach, cleanups and medical camps.

Ndegwa further announced that the company plans to provide TVET scholarships, advocate for economic empowerment through the Ndoto Zetu programme, create agricultural business value chain opportunities through the Wezesha Agri programme, and provide business training and microfinance loans in 13 counties.
