The President of the Republic, Andry Rajoelina, arrived at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport in Harare, Zimbabwe, on the afternoon of August 16. The visit is part of his participation in the 44th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), scheduled to be held on August 17, 2024 at the New Parliament on Hampden Hill.
The Madagascar Head of State is once again visiting the African continent, receiving a protocol welcome from the Zimbabwean Government, represented by the Minister of Mines, Mr. Souda Dzemu, at a critical time for Madagascar, as the new Government is about to take office.
The summit, themed “Driving Innovation to Discover New Prospects for Economic Growth and Development in SADC”, will bring together leaders from the organization’s 16 member states. The focus will be on identifying effective industrialization strategies and leveraging new technologies to stimulate growth and sustainable development in the region.
Zimbabwean President Dr. Emmerson Dambuzo Mnangagwa will take over the rotating presidency of SADC from Angola at this meeting. Andry Rajoelina will not only attend the opening ceremony, but also participate in the closed-door meeting where the heads of state will discuss regional issues. After the summit, he will give a thank-you speech to the participants at the closing ceremony.
This summit is particularly important for Madagascar, which has been designated as the official host of the 45th Southern African Development Community Summit in 2025. At the end of this meeting in Harare, Madagascar will also join the outgoing president (Angola), the current president (Zimbabwe) and the future president who will all be insured by the big island.
The president’s exit comes on the eve of a major political transition for Madagascar, raising questions about national priorities in the face of regional issues. Efforts to strengthen Madagascar’s presence on the African stage appear to be coupled with the need for internal coordination in the coming months.
