The Finnish Environment Agency reports that sightings of blue-green algae have increased since last week. The observations are also a bit more frequent than usual at this time of year.
Sightings are increasing especially in inland waters in the southern and western parts of the country and in some places in central Finland. The northernmost cyanobacteria observations were made in Northern Ostrobothnia and Kainuu.
According to the Environment Agency, large amounts of blue-green algae were found in Uusimaa, Varsinais-Suomi and Päijät-Hämee.
More blue-green algae blooms were also observed off the southwestern coast of Finland and in the southern Archipelago Sea. In the Archipelago Sea, the algae are mainly mixed with the water column, but surface rafts may also occur, according to the Finnish Environment Agency.
The algae was found along the coast, particularly in the area between Udenkaupunki and Rauma, and in Kosnas, according to the press release.

In the Gulf of Finland, blue-green algae appeared in the open sea areas of Inkoo and Porkkala and around Suursaari. The areas with the most algae this week were the southern side of the Archipelago Sea and the area stretching from Kemensaari to the Åland Islands.
Rainy, windless weather has led to blooms of blue-green algae. Rainwater washes nutrients into waterways, causing more blooms in lakes, according to the Finnish Environment Institute.
Ministry of Health and Welfare According to THL Blue-green algae are harmful to health, and some types of blue-green algae can even produce liver or neurotoxins. Blue-green algae can cause skin symptoms, vomiting, diarrhea, and flu-like symptoms such as runny nose and fever.
You may not swim in blue-green algae water or use it for bathing, washing or irrigation.
