The 47-year-old actor told People magazine that his father, who lives in Canada, rarely talks about the debilitating disease.
“He used the word ‘Parkinson’s’ probably three times, from what I can tell. There was a lot of denial, a lot of hiding,” Reynolds said. He said he had a complicated relationship with his father, James, and that his father was “a person who didn’t acknowledge his own feelings.”
“He was a boxer, he was a police officer, he was a tough dude. I don’t even remember having a real proper conversation with my dad. He was a very present dad who never missed a football game, but he didn’t have the ability to feel or at least share the full range of human emotions,” the Canadian actor said. He continued:
“I put the pieces of the story together”
Hallucinations and delusions became part of the illness, and the younger Reynolds said it further deepened the rift between him and his father. “At the time, I just thought, ‘My father has lost his mind,'” the actor said. “My father was sliding down a rabbit hole where he had a hard time differentiating fact from fiction. And then everyone else was. He was losing his basic belief and trust in his opinions in his life, and his mind was weaving all kinds of conspiracy webs. “He was very different from the person I grew up with and knew,” he said in a statement.
Reynolds said that in the years since his father’s death, he has been “constantly piecing the pieces of the story together.”
Reynolds, who currently has a happy family with his wife Blake Lively, and children James, Inez and Betty, and Orin, said it gave him a different perspective.
The actor said, “When I took something very valuable from my father, the healing for me shifted to the relationship I have with my own children. My father had great integrity. He would not lie. Now maybe I can fill in those little gaps that were hurting me, I can be present,” he said.
