Ruto asked to sack incompetent and corrupt ministers and advisers

All Saints Cathedral has urged President William Ruto to sack incompetent and corrupt Cabinet Ministers and advisers in his Cabinet.

The Rev. Kanon Evans-Omollo, the cathedral’s provost, said in a statement that some people around the president did not seem to have the best interests of the country at heart. The priests said sacking incompetent members of the government would restore Kenyans’ confidence in his leadership.

“Fire incompetent and corrupt government officials, starting with Cabinet ministers, who have been adversely affected in corruption cases and who have failed to provide honest and selfless advice.” “The pastor said.

The church also asked the president to come up with practical measures to curb excessive government spending.

“Let Kenyans see things change, from the use of luxury cars, excessive numbers of people travelling abroad, unnecessary and obnoxious daily allowances, bloated civil service, etc.,” Omollo added.

He also suggested that the Head of State abolish unnecessary positions such as the Chief Administrative Secretary and Personal Advisor.

“Creating an environment conducive for businesses to flourish by providing tax incentives to small and medium-sized enterprises to expand tax brackets and thereby increase tax revenue.” Church added.

All Saints Cathedral has announced it will host an interdenominational service of remembrance and prayer next Sunday in response to deadly protests taking place across the country.

Omolo said the main purpose of the event was to pray for the country, pray for those injured in the protests and remember those who lost their lives in the protests.

“We invite you to share this day with those affected and join us,” Omollo said.

The pastor also condemned police for using excessive force in controlling protests on Tuesday.

He said police stormed the cathedral, firing tear gas and live ammunition, even though it had opened its doors as a refuge for young protesters.

“Amid the protests and demonstrations that shocked the nation on Tuesday, June 25, 2024”. All Saints Cathedral (ASC) in Nairobi opened its doors to over 3,000 protesters; most of them Gen Z, hiding from angry police who were ordered not to allow any peaceful protests in violation of Section 73 of the Constitution. We are saddened that despite seeking shelter in the House of God, the police threw several tear gas shells inside the compound, affecting several people.

“All spent shell casings used in the hospital are kept by us.” Omollo added.

The pastor also demanded an apology from the police for the desecration of the place of worship.

“At 4:30 that evening, a team of police officers stormed the ASC compound, threatening everyone they found, ordering unarmed peaceful youth to lie down, and shooting indiscriminately in the compound. All bullets used in the compound were kept by us. For safety, the protesters had to evacuate to the CTC and the chapter house. Omollo said.

“We condemn this wanton encroachment on a sacred place of worship. We must respect the sanctity of places of worship, just as we expect to respect protected public infrastructure. We therefore demand an apology from the Inspector General of Police for the near desecration of our places of worship by his officers.”
