Gershkovich, 32, was arrested in late March 2023 in Yekaterinburg following a tip-off. Russian authorities suspected him of gathering information on tank maker Uralvagonzavod for the CIA. He is the first Western journalist to be accused of espionage in Russia since Soviet times.

Gershkovich and his entourage have vehemently denied the allegations, as have his employers and the U.S. government. Russia has never confirmed the allegations and has yet to provide evidence. The entire process has also been kept secret.
