Russia/A Ukrainian drone attacked an oil storage facility in Russia’s southern Rostov region early Sunday, causing a fire, the region’s governor reported.
Governor Vasily Golubev said videos posted on social media showed thick black smoke and flames coming out of the fire in the city of Proletarsk.
“In the south-east of the Rostov region, air defence systems repelled a drone attack. As a result of debris falling at the Proletarsk industrial storage facility, a fuel fire broke out,” he explained on Telegram.
“At 5:35 a.m. (02:35 GMT), firefighting efforts at industrial facilities in Proletarsk were suspended following a second drone attack,” he later added.
He said no one was injured and firefighting efforts were quickly resumed.
Proletarsk is about 250 kilometers from the Russian-Ukrainian border and about 350 kilometers from the eastern war zone of Ukraine controlled by Kiev’s forces.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said it shot down five Ukrainian drones overnight, including two over the Rostov region.
Since the conflict broke out in 2022, Ukraine has repeatedly attacked Russian oil and gas facilities hundreds of kilometers from its border, calling it “fair” retaliation for attacks on its energy infrastructure.
Earlier this month, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky praised his forces for bombing Russian oil facilities, saying the attacks would help bring a “just end” to the conflict.
For nearly two weeks, Ukrainian armed forces have been conducting an unprecedented cross-border offensive in Russia’s Kursk region, where they claim to control more than 80 towns.
