Both SVT and SR were reportedly blocked by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs SVT News. 81 European news websites from 25 countries were blocked. In addition to the two Swedish public service companies, France’s Le Monde and Germany’s Der Spiegel were also stopped.
The block was a response to the EU Council’s decision in May to “suspend the broadcasting activities of four websites supporting Russian propaganda and aggressive war in Ukraine.” This concerned the Ria Novosti, Voice of Europe, Isvestija and Rossijskaja Gazeta websites.
However, this is not the first time Russia has chosen to shut down a news website. For example, in 2022, the British BBC was blocked.
