The FSB named the journalist as Nick Paton Walsh, a British citizen who works as CNN’s chief international security correspondent.
The department also announced that Russia’s Federal Security Service had launched similar proceedings against two Ukrainian journalists.
CNN, which aired a report on Aug. 16 from the Russian border town of Suja, which is currently controlled by Kiev, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
In a CNN program, reporters traveled with a Ukrainian military convoy from Ukraine to Suja, where they encountered a nearly deserted town with only a few dozen elderly residents.
Russia’s Federal Security Service said in a statement that Moscow would soon issue international arrest warrants in the case of the three journalists. Anyone convicted of illegal border crossing could face up to five years in prison, it said.
This week, Russia invited a senior US diplomat to Moscow to protest against the “provocative actions” of American journalists reporting in the Kursk region.
On August 6, thousands of Ukrainian troops crossed Russia’s western border in a lightning-fast invasion of Kursk, the largest foreign invasion of Russia since World War II.
Russia, which is still trying to expel Ukrainian troops from Kursk, announced on Thursday that its forces had repelled an attempt by Ukrainian troops to infiltrate across the border to Bryansk, another Russian region, Reuters reported.
