A funeral was held at the local church on Friday for the late Volmerdange councillor and mayor, whose death two weeks ago shocked Luxembourg politics.

The small church in Walmer Dench could hardly accommodate the large crowd: more than 500 people attended the service, which was attended by screens set up both inside and outside.

The ceremony was also accompanied by musical performances and choral singing. Throughout the ceremony, multiple speakers took the opportunity to pay tribute to Hengel not only as a statesman, but also as a friend, colleague and beloved family member.

Hengel was remembered for his helpfulness, dedication, fairness and optimism. Many stressed how he uniquely embodied the spirit of the Moselle region and left a lasting mark on the community he served.

Several national dignitaries also attended the memorial service, including Claude Wiseler, who paid tribute to his colleague and friend, praising Hengel for always sharing his honest opinions to help others.

After the funeral, attendees were invited to the Volmerdange Cultural Center, where they continued to celebrate Hengel’s life over drinks. Max Hengel was 47 years old.
