…or keep reading to find their six picks!
Miranda July’s All Fours
The New York Times praised the book, but Sasha had a very different take: She hates it! Don’t let that put you off from reading All Fours, though. Despite a New York Times recommendation, Sasha was disappointed with Miranda July’s novel. She was expecting insightful views on monogamy and personal freedom, but instead she saw themes of sleazy and self-indulgent relationships, and characters she couldn’t relate to in real life.
My Family and Other Animals by Gerald Durrell
Sasha found Gerald Durrell’s My Family and Other Animals a delightful departure from her previous disappointment with Julie’s novel. Set on the undeveloped island of Corfu, the book brings to life Durrell’s whimsical childhood in a bohemian family and his deep fascination with wildlife. It’s a humorous journey, with even the antics of the tortoises coming to life, and the patient observation of Durrell’s mother, who tolerates the presence of pelicans in the bathtub. The book blends naturalistic observation with comic anecdotes, and is a real pleasure to read against the backdrop of the stunning Mediterranean.

Caitlin Moran’s “What About Men?”
Meredith and Sasha both enjoyed Caitlin Moran’s What It’s Like to Be a Man, which is different from the typical beach read and sparks real discussion rather than providing light entertainment. Moran fearlessly explores men’s issues, exploring topics such as male role models, suicide rates, and societal pressures with insight and humor. Her fresh approach to writing challenges conventions and encourages a deeper understanding of masculinity in today’s world. This book is essential for those interested in grappling with these complex issues.
It’s All Over by Colleen Hoover
Colleen Hoover’s upcoming film adaptation of the book is eagerly awaited by BookTok fans and promises to be a thrilling cinematic experience starring Blake Lively. Hoover, known for her compelling narratives, describes this work as one of her most challenging yet captivating. Known for being a gripping read, November 9th is the epitome of the novel, and readers are encouraged to dive into the novel before the film adaptation is released, ensuring they are fully immersed in the emotional journey and complexity of the story.

Stanley Tucci’s Taste: My Life with Food
Sasha also recommends Stanley Tucci’s memoir, Taste: My Life in Food, in which the American actor delves into his deep love of food and reflects on his life. The book perfectly blends culinary passion with personal anecdotes, portraying Tucci as a quintessential friend who values good food, entertaining, and a night of enjoyment.
Taste: Ernst’s “Feeling My Life Through Food”.
Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo
Meredith’s final recommendation is a heartwarming story about a couple who decide to embark on a round-the-world sailing adventure with their dog after losing their jobs. It’s a moving story, perfect for children, exploring themes of love, loss, forgiveness, hope and redemption. A beautiful animated film adaptation is currently being shown in Luxembourg, making it a great choice to read and watch with your children.
All of these books are available at Ernster’s Bookstore – you can pick up any of this month’s great reads in person or order them online. Happy reading, and enjoy your summer adventures with these wonderful books!
