The City of Luxembourg has launched a pilot project on Rue de Kollenberg in Sessange to introduce traffic calming measures to create safer shared roads for bicycles and cars, while also reducing speeds in residential areas.
In an effort to improve road safety and promote sustainable mobility, the City of Luxembourg has implemented new traffic calming measures on Rue Kronberg in Sessanges. As part of a pilot project launched on Wednesday, the city has adapted the street layout to allow for shared use by bicycles and cars, while also reducing vehicle speeds.
Kronbergstraße was identified as a suitable location for the scheme as it is a purely residential street with a 30 km/h speed limit and relatively low peak hour traffic of approximately 200 vehicles per hour.
As part of the project, the previously dedicated cycle lanes delineated by red paving stones have been removed. In their place are new infrastructure that will allow bicycles and vehicles to share the road more safely. statementthe changes are in line with the government’s current advice on shared roads where traffic levels allow.
The city’s traffic department has also installed six equally spaced “narrow road points” along Kronbergstraße. These points are designed to slow down vehicle traffic by requiring drivers to give way to oncoming vehicles. This measure not only reduces speeds, but also ensures that cyclists can safely navigate the street without encountering obstacles, thereby improving overall safety for all road users.
The pilot project follows a community engagement exercise led by the municipal council, with councillors discussing the proposed changes with Cessange residents during an Apéri’tour event on July 9.
The effectiveness of the traffic calming infrastructure will be closely monitored both during the initial consultation phase and once the new measures are implemented. Therefore, after the testing phase, the council will assess the impact of the project and determine whether to make the changes permanent.
