Diving prodigy Quan Hongchan, 17, won her second gold medal of the Paris Olympics and the third of her young career on Tuesday, maintaining China’s unbeaten record in diving in the French capital.
Quan Jian’s first jump received a full score of 10 points, and eventually won the first and second place for the Chinese team in the women’s 10-meter platform.
Jeon Ji-hyun was so excited that she won the championship with a total score of 425.60 points, while her teammate Chen Yuxi won the silver medal with 420.70 points. North Korean player Kim Mi-rae won the bronze medal with 372.10 points and she also burst into tears on the spot.
At the age of 14, Quan Na also won the women’s 10-meter diving platform championship at the Tokyo Olympics, and then teamed up with Chen Lin to win the women’s double 10-meter diving platform gold medal at the Paris Olympics.
“I had a very hard three years. I overcame a lot,” Quan later explained of her tears in victory.
“If I were to list them all, we would never finish. I’m very happy to have won this gold medal.”
The young girl demonstrated a drive for perfection that pushed her to win more gold medals.
Quan’s evaluation of his championship-winning performance was “Except for the first jump, I can get 50 points out of a full 100.”
“The rest of the dives I didn’t reach my goals.”
Through unremitting efforts, Quan Jian has become one of China’s outstanding Olympic athletes and is very popular in the country.
She was born into a poor rural family, one of five children. Her father was a citrus grower and her mother worked in a factory until a car accident left her in poor health.
Quan has previously said she hopes to win the prize money so she can pay for her mother’s medical expenses.
Three years ago, she won gold at the pandemic-postponed Tokyo Olympics, the first time an American women’s singles champion competed outside of China.
Ms. Guan’s diving journey began when she was discovered playing hopscotch with her school friends, when a former diver and coach noticed her jumping ability. Ms. Guan started diving at the age of seven.
The three-time Olympic gold medalist has won a large number of fans in China with his bubbly personality and outstanding athletic ability.
She always had a playful smile on her face when asked about her main feeling after her latest victory.
“I’m hungry,” she replied. “Let’s go get something to eat.”
China is the unrivalled superpower in diving, having won all five gold medals in diving so far in the French capital.
There are still three gold medals up for grabs.
Chinese divers won all but one of the eight gold medals at the Tokyo Olympics, with the other going to Britain.
