AS Monaco got their French Ligue 1 campaign off to a good start with a 2-0 away win over Lyon at the Allianz Stadium on Saturday to make it two straight wins.
Teenager Eliesse Ben Seghir capped the match by scoring first midway through the second half before Lamine Camara scored to seal the three points for the visitors.
Lyon have had another difficult start to their league campaign, having conceded five goals in their first two games after losing 0-3 at Rennes last weekend, the in-form team in the 2024 Ligue 1 campaign.
“It’s incredible, we’ve never won here,” said Ben Segil.
“We won by two goals and it was the third game we kept a clean sheet (including the friendly against Barcelona) so that shows our style of play.”
The hosts got off to a rocky start as striker Ernest Nuamah appeared to have pulled a muscle and the hosts were forced to make an early substitution, with new signing Georges Mikautadze coming on as a substitute.
About half an hour into the first half, Monaco’s Japanese striker Takumi Minamino got the best chance.
The former Liverpool man deftly got away from his marker inside the box but Lucas Perry flew in to close the angle and his outstretched arm deflected the ball at the far post.
Lyon almost took the lead before half-time, but Philipp Koehn quickly shot past the danger, and then the referee signalled a goal kick after Said Benrahma slightly overran the ball during an attack.

Monaco continued to have the upper hand after the break, with the wily Ben Seguirre causing problems for the Lyon defence.
The Moroccan player passed the ball to Takumi Minamino in the middle, who passed it to Breel Embolo, but the striker’s powerful shot from outside the box flew over the crossbar.
Embolo missed another chance in the 63rd minute when Maghnes Akliouche passed the ball into the box and he attempted an overhead kick in a crowded penalty area but the ball went over the goal.
But Monaco soon pressed, culminating in Ben Seguirre and Aglioché’s breakthrough in the 65th minute.
The 19-year-old quickly passed the ball to Akliouche, who then fired home a goal before Ben Seghir diverted the ball into the far corner with his right foot in a very tight space for a beautiful finish.
In the 80th minute of the game, Kamara received a cross from Kassoum Ouattara with no one defending at the back post and dribbled the ball into the goal, putting an end to the game.
However, with the game almost over, Camara received a second yellow card for a challenge in the closing stages of the game, which brought a glimmer of worry to Monaco’s game.
Lille maintained their 100% winning record this season with a 2-0 win over newly promoted Angers thanks to goals from Thomas Meunier and Mohamed Bayo in the first and second halves.
In the 34th minute of the game, Munir ended the home team’s extended possession time with a clean shot from the outside of his foot.
Bayo then extended Lille’s lead in the fifth minute of stoppage time, dashing Angers’ hopes of getting their first point of the season.
In Saturday’s final, Saint-Etienne lost 2-0 to Le Havre, with Abdoulaye Touré and Aruna Sanganert scoring within 10 minutes of each other in the second half to secure their first win of the season.
Brest will kick off the campaign with a trip to Lens on Sunday before Nice host southern rivals Toulouse and Roberto De Zerbi’s Marseille take on Reims.
