The government has approved the restoration of funding to individual charities linked to Caritas following a meeting of senior ministers to discuss an ongoing graft scandal within the organisation.
On Tuesday evening, the Ministry of State issued a statement announcing the results of a meeting on the Caritas scandal, where individual charities were once again approved for funding. Six ministers attended the meeting, including Prime Minister Luc Frieden, Xavier Bettel, Claude Meisch, Max Hahn, Gilles Roth and Martine Deprez.
The ministers received the report of the follow-up committee, which was set up on August 6 in response to reports of corruption at Caritas, and discussed several other issues that needed to be resolved before meeting with Caritas representatives. They concluded that the funds could be transferred again to different charitable entities related to Caritas, as long as various conditions were met, such as no misappropriation of funds and no application for a line of credit was made.
The case will most likely be dealt with at government level in August, with the involvement of a follow-up committee of senior officials to ensure that Caritas can resume state-required activities from September.
Ensuring this work can take place is vital to continue supporting the country’s most vulnerable, the ministers said in a statement.
