On the evening of July 20, chaos broke out in the underground parking lot of Place Guillaume II in the center of Luxembourg. The fire alarm triggered the security gates to close automatically, and it took people several hours to drive away.
The alarm went off at around 7pm, causing security gates to close and blocking access between levels of the car park, preventing cars from leaving. Many expressed frustration as they found themselves “trapped” inside the facility..
Luxembourg Mayor Lydie Polfer has now explained the cause of the alarm, attributing it to “a malfunction of the thermal cable detector, specifically a disturbance in the ohmic value of the detector.” In response to questions from Green Party local councillor Nicolas Back, she stressed that it was a false alarm and assured the public that “the people inside were in no way in danger.”
Mayor Polver also clarified that no one was ever trapped in the parking lot. The five stairwells were always accessible, even though those affected refused to use them despite police requests.
Some people remained in their vehicles with their engines running, but Polver noted that this did not pose a danger because carbon monoxide levels remained low throughout the incident.
The problem was eventually resolved, but not without further progress. The initial alarm was triggered at 7:09 pm on level -3 of the parking garage, and the fire doors on the traffic ramp were not electronically reopened until 9:37 pm.
According to Mayor Polver, the parking attendant was unable to manually deactivate the alarm and had to call a technician, who was delayed by a “highway closure” and arrived at around 8:35 p.m. to resolve the issue.
