July 10, 2024 (Khartoum) – Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) Commander Mohamed Hamdan Daglo “Hemetti” on Wednesday decided to terminate Youssef Ibrahim Izzat’s position as his political adviser from July 10.
According to a statement issued by the official RSF spokesperson, Hemeti instructed the relevant authorities to take the necessary measures to implement the decision, “which was made within the framework of routine internal arrangements.”
Analysts believe the decision to sack Izzat stems from his comments on the Islamist movement’s exclusion from last week’s meeting of political forces in Cairo, a move he considers unjustified.
He further elaborated: “I believe that the outcome of the Cairo conference marks a potential path towards a political process involving all stakeholders. This process could lead to a comprehensive agreement among the Sudanese people that addresses the crisis and its root causes. It would also develop solutions for state building, governance structures, citizens’ rights and addressing all related issues.”
Ezzat has served as a political adviser to Hemeti, the former deputy chairman of the Sovereign Council, since 2021. After the war with the Sudanese army broke out in April 2023, he became the main spokesman for the paramilitary forces.
In April this year, the RSF organized a workshop in Uganda to reorganize its civilian and political work. During the workshop, it was decided that RSF Deputy Commander Abdel Rahim Daglo would take over the management of the RSF Civilian Coordination Committee.
After being fired, Yusuf Izzat issued a statement on X, explaining that he had proactively asked Hemeti to relieve him of his duties because of a reorganization within the RSF and that his responsibilities had been transferred to the deputy commander, Abdul Rahim Dagalo.
“As a civilian working outside the RSF military framework, and for other reasons that I will elaborate on in the future, I seek my own dismissal,” Izzat stressed. “My role is rooted in deep personal ties that predate family ties and have linked me to Mohammed Hamdan Daglo (Hemetti) since childhood.”
He reiterated his commitment to continue providing political advice and working with youth and revolutionary groups committed to change to uphold just principles and a democratic civilian transition in Sudan.
Ezzat is known for his influence in shaping Hemeti’s political thought, especially in promoting the concept of a marginalized people’s revolution against the central authorities and other slogans promoted by the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM).
Prior to joining the RSF, Izzat was active in the armed movement against the Bashir government in Darfur in 2003. He was one of the few Arab Darfurian youths who joined the Sudan Liberation Movement led by Abdul Wahid al-Nour, from which the faction led by Minni Minawi later broke away.
Ezzat subsequently co-founded the United Revolutionary Forces Front and served as its political secretary. He also participated in the Doha peace talks on Darfur as a member of the Liberation and Justice Movement, eventually parting ways with the movement’s leader Tidjani el-Sisi over differences of opinion.
While studying at Nilayen University in Khartoum, Izzat was a passionate advocate for democratic ideals in student forums. He eventually immigrated to Canada, where he now resides as a citizen.
