August 22, 2024 (El Fasher/Ondurman) – Heavy shelling by Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on Thursday killed and injured civilians in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state, and Ondurman, the sister city of the capital Khartoum.

RSF also accused the army of carrying out 27 airstrikes in the past week, killing more than 280 civilians, a claim that Sudan Tribune could not independently verify. The army could not immediately be reached for comment.

A medical source told Sudan Tribune that at least two people were killed and about 15 people were injured in the shelling by the Rapid Security Forces that targeted residential areas in Omdurman. The shelling also hit villages in the northern countryside of Omdurman.

In El Fasher, the RSF intensified its shelling, targeting residential areas, the airport and a military base. The state capital has been under siege by the RSF since April 2024, with fighting intensifying in recent months.

RSF spokesman Al-Fatih Qarshi said in a statement that the army’s air strikes had caused extensive damage to civilian infrastructure, including hospitals, schools and markets. He said the strikes were continuing even as peace talks were underway in Geneva.

The military has not yet commented on the RSF’s claims.

The conflict in Sudan has caused a major humanitarian crisis, with millions of people in urgent need of food, water and medical care. Due to the fighting, aid agencies have difficulty reaching many parts of the country.
