Apia, Samoa – August 21, 2024 – This morning Archbishop-elect Father Moses Vittorio Tuohy was honoured during a royal ceremony after taking the oath of faith and fidelity. Creative Alcohol – befits his position as the new Bishop, priest and Catholic teacher in the Diocese of Apia, Samoa.
It was the first day of the Archbishop’s installation ceremony. The famous cultural Ava ceremony was held in the village of Safutu, the new Archbishop’s hometown.
The Ava ceremony embodied the Christian values of inclusion, welcome, acceptance and friendship. The guests, including the Pope’s representative, Cardinal Thorne of Tonga, the Archbishop, the Speaker of Parliament, the Prime Minister, Government and community leaders, expressed their congratulations and good wishes to the new leader of the Catholic Church in Samoa as they accepted the Ava Cup.
The Taup River blends with the Ava River and is flanked by the Omaga River of the Lilomai Ava River.
Father Moses Vittorio Tui took the final Ava Cup and thanked all those who had contributed to this celebration and acknowledged that the Spirit of God moved in the breeze and the swaying of leaves, that church members were busy with preparations, and that it was reflected in everyone from all walks of life who gathered this afternoon for the celebration.
Ravia, the orator of Safutu, expressed the villagers’ good wishes and presented a homemade scepter carved from local hardwood for the new archbishop to use to shepherd his flock.
Parliament adjourned
This morning, in Parliament, the Speaker announced an invitation to MPs to attend the ordination ceremony of the new Archbishop of the Catholic Church. In response to this invitation, Parliament announced that the meetings on Thursday and Friday would be adjourned until next Monday to allow MPs to attend the ordination ceremony.
This morning, Parliament held a heated debate on amendments to the Constitution Bill 2020, the Judiciary Bill 2020 and the Land and Titles Tribunal Bill 2020, all of which were passed in December 2020, three months before the April 2021 general election.
Acknowledging the significance of the appointment of the head of the Catholic Church, Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Matafah said the Church had been praying for the appointment since the death of the late Archbishop Arapati Louis Matliga in April last year.
Archbishop Moses’s ordination ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, August 22, at the St. Therese of the Childe Pastoral Center in Leauva’a, followed by a cultural performance.
Archbishop Moses will celebrate his first Mass at the St. Therese of the Childe Pastoral Center in Leauva’a at 10 a.m. Friday, followed by entertainment by the church’s youth.
