The Romanian government on Thursday approved a national artificial intelligence strategy for 2024-2027, in line with the European Union’s vision to become a global leader in the field.
Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciorac said the strategy “provides European financial support for the introduction of state-of-the-art technologies” and wants state agencies, led by the tax authority (ANAF), to “quickly and widely apply artificial intelligence to risk analysis, public tenders and any process aimed at optimizing public spending.”
In order to achieve the EU’s ambition to be on the same front as the world’s main AI players, Romania needs to follow current trends, establish a regulatory framework and, in line with the strategy, chart a course for adopting technologies that are adapted to national conditions.
This involves leveraging expertise in science, technological innovation and investment through collaboration between academia, business, research, innovation and public administration.
In order for the country to keep pace with digitalization, the transformation will be implemented through five strategic axes: digital public administration, digital economy, digital education, cybersecurity, digital communications and future technologies, among which artificial intelligence is given priority attention along with 5G, the Internet of Things, quantum communications, robotics, blockchain and smart cities.
The government also hopes that AI will transform Romania’s economic landscape.
The strategic document states that economic growth and social prosperity “will depend on Romania’s ability to understand, exploit and adapt to the rapid developments driven by emerging technologies, especially artificial intelligence,” while noting that AI should not create obstacles or problems for end users.
The implementation of the national AI strategy will be the responsibility of the intelligence agencies SRI and SIE, which are part of an inter-ministerial committee tasked with implementing the strategy.
In March this year, the European Parliament adopted the AI Act to ensure safety, respect fundamental rights and promote innovation. The regulation, agreed by member states in December 2023, aims to protect fundamental rights, democracy, the rule of law and environmental sustainability from challenges posed by dangerous AI systems.
