Romania recorded its first win in 24 years by defeating Ukraine 3-0 in their opening match of Group 5 of the European Football Championship in Germany.

Two brilliant long-range strikes from captain Nikola Stanciu and midfielder Razvan Marin in the first half stunned coach Rebrov’s Ukraine side, which controlled the first 20 minutes of the match.

The outcome of the match was decided about an hour into the game when influential striker Dennis Mann ran into the box following a corner kick and passed the ball low to Dennis Dragos, who slotted it into the net.

Romania’s solid defence held off a Ukrainian counterattack and secured just its second win in 17 European Championship games, the first of which was a 3-2 win over England in the 2000 World Cup.
