The mayor of Cámara de Lobos said this Saturday that Fajã das Galinhas does not provide safe conditions for people to return to their homes and is currently processing relocations.
“We understand that the cliffs and the road to Fajã das Galinhas will not provide safe conditions for people to return to their homes for a period of time that we cannot determine,” Leonel Silva told Lusa.
The mayor disclosed that the decision had been communicated to residents who were evacuated from the location when the fire broke out.
He explained that residents will now be temporarily housed in municipal, public and regional facilities while construction of permanent housing at another site is completed.
Leonel Silva stressed that the municipality will soon start building 30 houses in the Castelejo area, with an investment of 7.5 million euros, close to Fajã das Galinhas, a location that does not pose any risks.
He stressed that the project is not new and was designed last year during the local housing strategy, when Fajã das Galinhas was already marked as high risk.
The mayor said the fire had accelerated the process, revealing that most people no longer wanted to return to Faja das Galinhas.
Lionel Silva stressed that the only road leading to Farha would only be reopened so that the authorities could clear the animals there, but access would remain off limits to residents because safety conditions could not be guaranteed.
The Madeira government intends to relocate residents of Fajã das Galinhas to “more comfortable areas”, given that the area remains isolated following a fire, its president said on Saturday.
“The situation in Fajã das Galinhas was very dangerous, but now that it is no longer the case, I think we are in a position to find a definitive solution for these families,” said Miguel Albuquerque at a press conference reviewing the situation of the fire.
On August 17, 120 people in the parish of Estreto de Camara de Lobos, in the upper part of the city, were evacuated from the scene as fire surrounded the area, rendering the only road impassable and covering a 10-meter stretch of about two kilometers along the cliff.
The rural fire on Madeira Island broke out on August 14 in the mountainous area of Ribeira Brava and gradually spread to the cities of Camara de Lobos, Ponta do Sol and Santana.
On Saturday morning, the 11th, the regional civil defense department said the fire had been brought under control and operators were still carrying out follow-up operations on the scene and controlling some hot spots.
