Republicans Rep. Ralph Norman rebuked his Democratic colleague Jerry Nadler for interrupting Norman to correct him. Donald TrumpDuring the conviction The House Rules Committee meets Tuesday.
Norman said he spent hours at the hearing “listening to the smoke screen that the Democrats were creating” about Trump’s criminal trial in New York. Convicted of 34 counts of falsifying business records.
“They’re bringing Donald Trump to trial, and it’s a felony. Really? And it’s being tried by a judge who is notoriously anti-Trump,” Norman said.
At this point, Nadler interrupted his colleague to say that he was not convicted by a judge (a lie that Trump has exaggerated), but by a jury.
“The jury. The jury. Not the judge,” Nadler said.
Norman responded angrily: “Mr. Nadler, I’m going to speak. If you’re going to interrupt me, Mr. Chairman, when he interrupts me, please tell him to stop. It’s my time, and I’ll let you respond, but I’ve had enough. You interrupted everyone else, and it’s rude.”
Tuesday’s hearing was intended to discuss possible rules for debate as the White House considers a resolution that would hold Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress for refusing to turn over Audio clip of President Joe Biden’s interview with special counsel Robert Hull.
Earlier this year, Hull released a summary of his investigation into classified documents found in President Biden’s home and office after he left the White House in 2012.
His report included a tough examination of President Biden’s memory after Hull suggested he was extremely forgetful.
During the hearing, Democrats accused Republicans of using the contempt of Congress charges to divert public attention from Trump’s recent conviction.
“This resolution may boost Donald Trump’s spirits before he is sentenced on 34 felony counts, but it certainly will not persuade the Department of Justice to produce the single remaining problematic document,” Nadler told his colleagues.
Democratic Rep. Jim McGovern said his fellow Republicans were unfairly criticizing the Justice Department for targeting the former president even though the agency is investigating, prosecuting and trying the president’s son. Hunter Bideninvolving firearms charges.
“How can any reasonable Republican say that the Biden administration is using the Justice Department to hurt Republicans and help Democrats? They just convicted the president’s son,” McGovern said.
