U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez’s political career appears to be coming to an end on August 20, when the three-term New Jersey senator – once one of the most powerful political figures in the country – is expected to resign, according to multiple media reports.
The move had been expected — or at least pushed by many — ever since Menendez (D-N.J.) was convicted July 16 on 16 federal charges, including bribery, racketeering, wire fraud, obstruction of justice and acting as a foreign agent.
His troubles were far from over.
Menendez, 70, will be sentenced on October 29 and could spend the rest of his life in prison. Menendez has pledged to appeal the sentence.
He is expected to resign from the Senate, which is beginning a review that could recommend his expulsion. The New Jersey Globe first reported.
If Menendez resigns, Gov. Phil Murphy will have the responsibility to replace him.
Murphy has not yet revealed who he is considering. His wife, first lady Tammy Murphy, who briefly ran for the nomination, is certainly a possibility. U.S. Rep. Andy King (D-3)road The Democratic candidate who wins the Democratic nomination and will face Republican Curtis Bashaw in November is certainly an option.
Some have suggested Murphy pick King, which would make him more senior than any other new senator if he wins in November.
The Senate, which is currently in session, will recess on August 5 and reconvene in September. Whoever Murphy chooses to replace Menendez will serve for four months.
