The World Health Organization’s Regional Director for the Western Pacific, Dr Saia Ma’u Piukala, will visit New Zealand on Wednesday 17 July to attend a University of Auckland seminar at Fale Pasifika.
Dr Piukala, the first Tongan and Pacific person to be appointed to the position, will discuss his vision for the region. Expressing the University’s excitement, Associate Professor Sir Collin Tukuitonga said: “The University is honoured to host the Regional Director, especially given his short visit.”
Dr. Piukara is a Tongan surgeon and former Minister of Health who has championed initiatives in chronic diseases, safe surgery and disaster response.
During his visit, Dr. Piukara will meet with governments and stakeholders to discuss key health issues and explore opportunities for collaboration.
