The UN Security Council Sanctions Committee approved an exemption from the travel ban on four senior Taliban government officials to Saudi Arabia to attend the Hajj ceremonies.
According to information published on the Security Council website, the exemption was approved on June 5, allowing Taliban government Interior Minister Sirajuddin Haqqani, Deputy Prime Minister Maulvi Abdul Kabir, Taliban leader Abdul Haq Watik, and Minister of Intelligence, Hajj and Endowments Noor Mohammad Saqib to travel to Mecca for the Hajj.
An international travel ban was imposed on these individuals.
Sirajuddin Haqqani, Maulvi Abdul Kabir, Abdul Haq Vathiq and Noor Mohammad Saqib are prominent figures in the Taliban who hold key positions in the group’s leadership structure.
UN Security Council Resolution 1988 of 2011 imposed various sanctions on individuals and entities associated with the Taliban in order to support peace and stability in Afghanistan.
Sirajuddin Haqqani and Abdul Haq Watik paid an official visit to Abu Dhabi on June 15 and met with UAE Emir Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and other officials.
The United States has accused Haqqani of involvement in deadly terrorist attacks and offered a $10 million reward for his arrest.
Vatik was held in Guantanamo prison for many years and was released in 2014 in exchange for the release of an American soldier.
