Sometimes serving as a boxing referee requires hazard pay.
Keshawn Davis won a hard-fought 10-round unanimous decision over Miguel Madueno on Saturday night at the Prudential Center in Newark, but the most shocking part of the lightweight bout was the referee getting hit.
Before the end of the sixth round, Davis appeared to injure Madueno at the bell, and then Madueno rushed in front of Davis and began to talk trash.
Davis pushed Madueno in the face and Madueno slapped him back.
But Madueno did not attack Davis; Accidentally hit the referee — who was trying to pull two fighters apart — in the face, staggering the referee but not knocking him to the ground.
Madueno was not disqualified for the incident.
Actress Rosie Perez, who was watching the top boxing match on ESPN, used vulgar language in a tweet and argued that Madueno should be punished for attacking the referee.
“It’s crazy why the referee didn’t deduct points for the slap!” Perez posted on X.
All three judges scored the fight 99-91 for Davis, improving his record to 11-0 (seven knockouts).
Madueno (31-3, 28 KOs) suffered his third defeat, but just like his previous defeats, he held on until the final bell.
The fight, which was broadcast live on ESPN, was intense, with both fighters being thrown down, lifted up and struck by the referee, but the two fighters finally embraced after the hard-fought battle.
“We were all very strong at the time, and none of our wills were broken,” Davis, the 2020 Olympic silver medalist, said after the game. According to The Ring.
