Josh Read took the lead in the 2024 Barbados Rally 2 Championship by taking maximum points in last weekend’s First Citizens King of the Hill event.
The Barbadian driver overcame a tricky day in his Ford Fiesta R5 to take a five-point lead into the championship’s main event, the BCIC Barbados Rally, which kicked off with two special floodlit stages at Bushy Park in Barbados on Friday evening.
Reid currently has 47 points, while British player Rob Swan and Jamaican player Kyle Gregg are tied for first place with 42 points each. Roger Hill is fourth with 33 points.
Swann, in his Skoda Fabia Rally2 evo car, led the championship contenders after two races but was overshadowed by Read’s final race time, while championship newcomer and fellow Fabia Rally2 evo driver Logan Watson took his best result of the season so far in third.
The BCIC RB24 is the most important weekend of the year for championship contenders, with up to 60 points awarded. All drivers who win the overall championship will also receive 10 bonus points.
In last Sunday’s King of the Hill event, former championship leader Greg led the first round in his Fiesta Rally2 (2:19.14). Swann was next in line for the title, ahead of Hill (Fabia R5), Adam Malliali (Fiesta R5) and Turks and Caicos Rally Team’s Paul Houghton in his Citroen C3 R2.
However, Greg and Marallieu did not continue to compete on the day as they retired early in the second run due to an accident.
Swann was fastest of the title contenders in this run (2:15.42), ahead of Houghton, Hill, Watson and Reid, who subsequently shaved four tenths off Swann’s record to take the lead in round 3. Swann retained second place, while Watson was now third, his Fabia now fitted with a white front skirt to replace the original one which had been damaged by a crash at the Society chicane in round two.
A determined Reed shaved another two-tenths off his time in the final run (2:14.85), and although Swann and Watson both improved their times, they were still unable to catch him. (PR/RB)
