A person from the Greater Toronto Area is facing charges for allegedly participating in the activities of a listed terrorist organization, the RCMP says.
Police said in a news release Thursday that after a “lengthy national security investigation,” a suspect had been charged:
- Participating in the activities of a terrorist organization for the purpose of enhancing the terrorist organization’s ability to carry out terrorist activities.
- Inciting others to commit terrorist crimes.
Police said the alleged offences took place when the person was a teenager and therefore cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
“The RCMP is continuing to investigate and assess the possible impact of this alleged activity,” the release read.
“At this time, there is no known associated risk to the public.”
Investigators went on to say in the news release that the RCMP “continues to be concerned about growing trends in violent extremism,” noting that violent radicalization is not driven by any particular background, culture or religion.
“As part of our core values, RCMP employees are committed to working with our partners to protect our communities,” Superintendent James Parr said in a statement.
“We would like to thank the Toronto Police Service, the Public Prosecution Service of Canada, the Department of Justice, the provincial counter-terrorism unit and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for their cooperation and collaboration during this investigation.”
Police said the accused in the case will appear in court via video link on August 27.
