(CNS): Police and the Cayman Islands Government Information Security Office are warning WhatsApp users about a scam that allows criminals to take over a victim’s account. The scammers can then Send messages to any contact claiming to be the victim until the account can be restored.
Scammers can take over a victim’s account by sending text messages or WhatsApp messages, or by having the victim receive a call from an unknown mobile number or someone claiming to be someone the victim knows.
The RCIPS noted that there have been reports of scammers using deepfake audio — artificial intelligence imitating a person’s voice.
The message the victim receives is deliberately alarming and indicates the need for immediate action, which requires the user to provide their WhatsApp six-digit verification code. Once the scammer has the verification code, they can take over the account, impersonate the victim and send messages to the victim’s contacts to deceive and scam.
The RCIPS says despite previous warnings, people are still falling victim to this scam.
WhatsApp users are urged to be vigilant against such scams and never generate a WhatsApp six-digit code and send it to anyone. Users who receive suspicious messages should not reply, open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message.
