The grooved lizard, a species found in different parts of Idle, was recorded on a mobile phone by a group of travellers picnicking in the foothills of Mount Ararat.
“Grooved lizard was mistaken for a venomous snake and killed”
Bahadır Akman, a Ph.D. lecturer at the Forestry Department of Idır University Technical Science Vocational School, said that the corrugated lizard is a type of legless lizard.
Ackerman explains that people often compare this lizard to a snake because it has no legs, “and the corrugated lizard was killed because it was thought to be a venomous snake, but in fact, our species, which is suitable for agriculture, is very useful to humans. This is a species that has been slaughtered due to false awareness, and we are introducing this to local people through our work and understanding what this means. “We are trying to show that this is such a different species,” he said.
Ackerman noted that identifying the species is quite easy:
“It has scales all over its body and a groove on the side of its body. That’s where its Turkish name comes from. It has free eyelids, most snakes don’t have free eyelids, this species does. It has grooves on both sides. So, especially for our farmer friends, “What we want is, if you want to get good results from the products you produce, don’t harm this species.”
