(NBC News) Fatman Scoop reportedly collapsed and died at a concert in Connecticut Friday night.
His family confirmed his death in a post on Instagram on Saturday. He was 53.
“It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of the legendary FatMan Scoop,” read a post on his Instagram page. “Last night, the world lost a radiant soul, a beacon of light on stage and in life.”
The rapper and hype man, whose real name is Isaac Freeman III, suffered a medical emergency on stage while performing at the Green & Gold Party summer concert in Hamden, about six miles from New Haven.
He was taken to a hospital by ambulance, said Lauren Garrett, the town’s mayor.
In a statement released Saturday, Garrett thanked the crowd and the medical staff who tried to perform life-saving measures.
She posted on Facebook: “On behalf of the Town of Hamden, I would like to express my heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Isaac Freeman, aka Fatman Scoop. He was an exceptional performer with a huge following, as evidenced by the thousands of fans who came out to see his final performance at Hamden Town Centre Park.”
The mayor said grief counseling services will be available to community members.
Videos posted on social media showed a shirtless Fatman Scoop inciting the crowd in a downtown park before collapsing. The event was originally scheduled for last month but was postponed until Friday night due to weather conditions.
Fatman Scoop has worked with many famous musicians, including Missy Elliott’s “Lose Control”, Mariah Carey’s “It’s Like That”, Ciara’s “Level Up (Remix)” and Chingy’s “Let’s Ride”.
“FatMan Scoop was not only a world-class performer, he was a father, brother, uncle and friend. He was the source of laughter in our lives, a constant source of support, unwavering strength and courage,” his family wrote. “FatMan Scoop was recognized around the world as the undisputed voice of the club. His music made us dance and embrace life. His joy was contagious and the generosity he showed to all will be deeply missed but never forgotten.”
Missy Elliott said Fatman Scoop’s “sound and energy have contributed to many songs that have made people feel happy and want to dance for over 20 years.”
“Your impact is huge and will never be forgotten,” she wrote in a post on X.
Public Enemy rapper Chuck D called Fatman Scoop a “great guy.”
Questlove, a member of hip-hop band The Roots, said Fatman Scoop is “the true embodiment of hip-hop music. Forget your troubles, live in the moment and have fun.”
“So sad to see you go bro,” he wrote on Instagram. “You will be missed but never forgotten. *holds up $100 bill in your memory*.”
