June 22, 2024 (El Fasher) – The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) shelled the Maternity Hospital in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur State, on Friday evening, killing a female pharmacist and destroying a pharmacy.
The attack followed an incident on 8 June, when Rapid Support Forces attacked El Fasher South Hospital, the only hospital in the city capable of responding to mass casualties, looting an ambulance, medicines and staff salaries, and attacking medical staff, patients and their caregivers.
Medical facilities have been attacked and forced to close, exacerbating civilian suffering, especially as the number of casualties continues to rise due to ongoing clashes between the army and its armed movement allies and the Rapid Security Forces.
Sudan Tribune received a statement from the Fasher Resistance Committee saying that “the Saudi-built hospital was shelled by the Rapid Security Forces, resulting in the destruction of the pharmacy and the injury of a pharmacist.”
Pharmacist Amina Ahmed Bakhit died late Saturday from injuries sustained in the attack at the Women and Maternity Hospital.
Located in Darajah district in the west of Darfur city, El Fasher Maternity Hospital is the only women’s and obstetrics medical facility still in operation in Darfur. It is also the only hospital that accepts surgeries and injuries after the South Hospital ceased operations earlier this month.
In a tweet on the “X” platform, Darfur Governor Minni Minawi accused the RSF of deliberately shelling the Women’s Hospital, which destroyed the pharmacy and killed a pharmacist. He believed that it was a dangerous thing for forces supported by a country that enjoys UN membership (referring to the UAE) to target medical facilities, adding that “the world must re-examine its morality.”
Since military clashes broke out between government forces and their allied armed movements and the Rapid Security Forces in El Fasher on 10 May, several medical facilities have been targeted.
In addition to the RSF attack on the South Hospital, on May 11, army warplanes launched an airstrike near El Fasher’s only children’s hospital, killing two children in the intensive care unit and a medical worker. On May 19, the Maternity Hospital was also targeted.
The parties to the conflict have ignored repeated regional and international calls to spare El Fasher from the threat of war, considering it to be a key humanitarian hub for the entire Darfur region, hosting 800,000 displaced persons in addition to 2 million refugees.
Meanwhile, Abu Obeida Khalifa al-Taish, assistant to the head of political affairs of the Sudan Liberation Movement, said that the attack on the El Fasher Maternity Hospital will lead to a complete deterioration of the health situation in North Darfur. He urged the supporters of the militias, including organizations, countries and individuals, to examine the position of the militias, who want to rule Sudan and kill people without mercy.
