Mighty Mukuru Rovers beat Kamuzu Barracks 1-0 at the Civo Stadium in Lilongwe while their title challengers Silver Strikers finished joint first with Northern Regional side Chitipa United.
In the 29th minute of the first half, tall defender Lawrence Chaziya scored a goal, which was enough for the nomads to get maximum points.
It is an exciting result as both teams are vying for the 2024 TNM Super League title.
Rangers head coach Meke Mwase praised his players for their outstanding performance.
“I kept urging my players that in the second round, it is not easy to get the maximum points but we should take advantage of the opportunities and that is what happened today. Going forward, we will take every game seriously,” Mwase said.
Charles Kamanga, who coached the Kamuzu Barracks, acknowledged his team’s defeat and congratulated the Rangers on their victory.
“Today was not our lucky day because we didn’t have any shots, that’s how football works, we didn’t create any chances so we didn’t score, we have to go back to Kamuzu Barracks, sit back and there will be better things in the future,” Kamanga said.
The result means the gap between Rangers and Silver Strikers has closed to six points, with Rangers having 38 points from 19 games, while the Bankers have 44 points from 18 games played so far.
