A passenger on the flight wrote on Facebook that one person was causing the chaos and that the Rainier team handled the situation “professionally.” He added that the disruptive passenger was “intoxicated” and tried to light a cigarette on the plane, which led to a fight.
Spanish flight controllers confirmed what had happened on X Network (ex-Twitter): “The crew on a flight from Liverpool to Tenerife contacted us to say there was a violent passenger on board and that he had to be diverted to Santiago de Compostela.”
It is not clear if any arrests have been made following the incident, with Ryanair telling the UK’s Sun newspaper, which published the report: “The flight from Liverpool to Tenerife was diverted to Santiago after a passenger became violent on board. The crew requested police assistance in advance for the arrest, and local police arrived and removed the passenger before continuing on to Tenerife and banning him from the Rainier flight”.
