Immediate response teams carry out rock removal and cleanup after a mountain collapsed on a home in a densely populated neighborhood in the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa.
The Honduran agency also warned of rising water levels in the Ulua River, the Central American country’s largest river and considered one of the most vulnerable to natural phenomena.
Honduran authorities have maintained yellow alerts for monitoring in seven of Honduras’ 18 departments and green alerts for precaution in four of them since Saturday as a low-pressure system produced rainfall.
A yellow alert in Honduras requires preventive evacuation in areas at risk of landslides, mudslides, flooding or river flooding, while a green alert means that the behavior of phenomena that could lead to a disaster must be monitored.
According to the National Center for Atmospheric, Oceanic and Seismological Research (Cenaos), the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITC) will approach the Gulf of Fonseca (Pacific Ocean), which will result in a low-pressure system with “high precipitation, gusty winds and active electrical activity”.
The Honduran agency asks the public to permanently monitor the water levels of the Goascorán and Nacomé rivers and recommends that the Merchant Marine Directorate limit or close fishing operations and the navigation of vessels of medium and shallow draft, especially those that transport people, due to high waves.
