Rainbow steals the show in NASA highlighted image

The NASA-maintained Astronomy Picture of the Day website defines Monday’s featured image as a portrait of an American rainbow. The photo also shows his end, which was not the legendary pot of gold, but a tree located in California.

The record was captured by photographer Eric Houck in January of this year. Although the photo shows the end of the rainbow aligned with the tree, others in the area would have seen the end of the rainbow somewhere else.

The difference in perception is because the position of the rainbow depends on where the observer is located.

This optical phenomenon occurs due to the dispersion of white light into the colors of the visible spectrum. Rain creates droplets that act like magnets, and the effect can be seen with the naked eye.
