From the outset, Raducanu appeared to be at a slower tempo and looked lethargic compared to the energetic Sun, whose shots were more dynamic and penetrating.
In contrast, Raducanu’s forehand seemed to lack its usual verve and she seemed afraid to release the handbrake, perhaps because she was often off target whenever she did so.
She seemed unable to generate any sustained pressure against the calm, tireless Sun, whose attacks rarely fell below ferocious intensity.
New Zealand’s Sun Yang had the upper hand in all aspects, taking a 3-0 lead in the first set with a double break, and then easily withstood Raducanu’s counterattack and broke again to win the first set.
The British player kept fighting hard after that, but finally took the match into a decider with a decisive break in the last game of the second set, but this was the closest she came to turning the tide of the match.
After a severe fall and lengthy treatment, Raducanu was broken in the first game of the third set, and Sun then broke again to lead 5-2.
Raducanu saved a match point but Sun showed no sign of backing up, scoring another point with a forehand winner and sealing the win after the Briton’s return went out of bounds.
