According to the Permanent Mission of Turkmenistan to the United Nations, the first ministerial meeting of the group was held on April 16, 2024 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
The Group of Friends of Sustainable Transport was established on July 6, 2022 by the Permanent Mission of Turkmenistan to the United Nations as an informal platform for maintaining a broad multilateral dialogue aimed at promoting safe, cheap, affordable and sustainable transport systems for all, supporting sustainable economic growth, improving the social well-being of people and expanding international cooperation and trade among countries.
Joining the Friends of Sustainable Transport Group does not entail any financial, legal or other obligations and aims to consolidate efforts within the framework of the United Nations Decade on Sustainable Transport (2026-2035).
At the same time, more than 15 countries have joined the Group to date, notably as co-sponsors of United Nations General Assembly resolutions 72/212 of 20 December 2017, 75/313 of 29 July 2021, 78/148 of 19 December 2023 on “Strengthening the connections among all modes of transport to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals”, and 77/286 of 16 May 2023 on “World Sustainable Transport Day”.
