The British and U.S. Virgin Islands are currently under a hurricane warning as Tropical Storm Ernesto approaches the region.
The storm is forecast to pass near or directly over the Virgin Islands tonight before skimming the northeastern coast of Puerto Rico tonight into Wednesday. Ernesto is expected to move into the western Atlantic later this week.
Tropical storm conditions are expected to begin affecting the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico later today and throughout the night, with a hurricane-force wind potential to hit the U.S. Virgin Islands, Vieques, and Culebra during the evening.
Storm surges of 1 to 3 feet above ground level are expected along the east coast of Puerto Rico, from San Juan to Guayama, including the islands of Culebra and Vieques. Similar storm surges are expected in the U.S. Virgin Islands, including St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix. In the British Virgin Islands, water levels could rise 1 to 3 feet above normal tides, with the possibility of large, destructive waves near the coast.
Ernesto is expected to begin turning northward into the open ocean in the western Atlantic Ocean after passing near Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands on Wednesday. The National Hurricane Center predicts that the hurricane will strengthen into a powerful Category 2 hurricane and approach Bermuda by the weekend.

Tropical Storm Warnings have been issued for several islands in the northeastern Caribbean, including:
- St. Kitts, Nevis, Montserrat, Antigua, Barbuda and Anguilla
- Guadeloupe
- Saint Martin and Saint Barthelemy
- St. Martin
- Puerto Rico
Tropical storm conditions are forecast within the next 36 hours, so residents in these areas are urged to take precautions. A hurricane warning remains in effect, indicating that hurricane conditions are possible within the next 12 hours.
Authorities are closely monitoring the progress of Hurricane Ernesto and are advising residents in the northeastern Caribbean to remain alert and prepared as the storm approaches.
