At a protest today, the Public Service Union (PSU) called for the resignation of Auditor-General Dorothy Bradley, accusing her of failing to address a massive backlog of audit work and a lack of transparency in her operations. The PSU made the demand after years of frustration with the office’s responses to information requests under the Freedom of Information Act. Union president Dean Flowers said the union had been met with silence and delays despite repeated formal requests for access to key documents and audit reports.
Dean Flowers, president of Penn State University, said: “The Auditor General, Ms Dorothy Bradley, must go. We have been asking for an audit of the Ministry of Lands since 2010. We have not been able to obtain the audit report done by officials of the Ministry of Lands. We could have exposed the corruption that took place in the Ministry of Lands under the successful government, from King Hatchet It’s a hammer to start with. The former Prime Minister said so. Yet this government refuses to commission an audit of the Ministry of Lands. Refused, Dorothy Bradley refused to do it and I say to all of our partners, the United States, the United Kingdom, I know all of those who supported her re-election, she must go, she is doing a disservice to the people of Belize and I call on the Prime Minister, if you are serious, to commission an audit of the Ministry of Lands. An audit of the Ministry of Health procurement. We need an audit of the Ministry of Health procurement. We need an audit to understand how the money is being spent in health. These are the departments with the largest budgets. I say it again. Why don’t we have an audit of the Ministry of Works? Good things are happening in these ministries, you know? It’s not all bad, but no one is being held accountable for the millions of dollars of debt that our children are saddled with. I challenge the people of Belize and the media. Ask, ask, ask the national debt report. What is our current debt load? We know where we are in 2020. “The government will open its books and explain to us that we have fallen off a cliff. We have written to the prime minister to please tell us where our debt stands, our national debt, the depth of our bilateral and transnational debt. There has been no response. They refuse to let us know where we are. These things are very important because combined with this Saudi loan, it is only a matter of time before we fall off a cliff again.”
In 2022, Flowers spoke out against the government’s renewal of Bradley’s contract, which had been terminated by the previous administration.
