Citing information he has received, the President of the Republic, Mr. Nicos Christodoulidis, indicated this evening that some progress towards the resumption of negotiations on the Cyprus issue could be achieved soon.
“Tomorrow dawns a difficult day, it will be difficult for all of us. The issue of missing persons is the most tragic aspect of this ongoing occupation,” the President of the Republic said, speaking to journalists attending a panoramic commemoration of the missing in Cornos.
At the same time, if we really want to honour the memory of all those who sacrificed themselves for the existence of our country today, for the existence of the Republic of Cyprus, for the existence of our institutions, we must do everything possible, despite the difficulties – and not that I am mistaken, I know them first-hand – to start a dialogue again. I think, based on the information I have and the data before me, that we will soon make some progress in this direction. We hope that these developments will also lead to a substantive resumption of the negotiations. ”
Asked if he had seen the video released by the Turkish army today, the President of the Republic said: “I have seen the video, I have seen the testimonies of many people who left their homes, I saw the children of the missing yesterday, children who were mostly my age. I repeat, tomorrow is a difficult day, but the most important thing is that we all received this information, and if we really want to commemorate these people, this is the most important thing.”
Asked if he thinks the EU will also be involved in the negotiations if they resume, President Christodoulidis said, “The EU is part of the solution to the Cyprus problem, whether some people want it or not. The Republic of Cyprus is a member of the EU and it will continue to be a member of the EU even after the possible resolution of the Cyprus problem, and I really believe, given my experience in the negotiation process, that where there is disagreement on these issues, there is a solution. That solution comes from the EU itself.”
Asked to comment on the Turkish side’s statements such as “we will come in the evening” and asked if he was worried about the creation of new facts on the ground, the President of the Republic said that “the passage of time, in general, and not only these days, has created new facts on the ground that make negotiations difficult and eliminate the prospects for a solution to the Cyprus problem, and we are well aware of this. At the same time, the current state of affairs cannot be the future of this country, and that is why we are doing everything possible, I repeat, to resolve the Cyprus problem”.
