PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Protests against newly imposed passage conditions by truck drivers have led to disruption of trade between Afghanistan and Pakistan through the Torkham border crossing.
On Monday, truck drivers and customs clearance staff blocked the road leading to “zero point” to protest the implementation of the “temporary access document” condition, which has brought bilateral trade to a standstill.
Protesters placed containers on the main road and burned tires to block the passage of goods-laden vehicles on both sides of the busy intersection, a major commercial hub, Dawn newspaper reported.
The protesters called for the immediate revocation of TAD conditions for transporters and the relaxation of visa policies for travel between the two countries.
In March this year, the two neighbouring countries agreed to introduce TAD for cross-border transport of people between the two countries who do not have passports and valid visas.
But transporters complained that they could neither afford the $100 TAD registration fee nor had detailed information on the procedure for obtaining the document.
Protest leader Qari Nazim Gul said their protests will continue until trade restrictions are lifted and trade goods are cleared quickly.
Sit-ins and road blockades have forced hundreds of drivers to pull their trucks over. Many drivers fear that food such as fresh fruit, vegetables and poultry products will rot.
