This time a year ago, when the couple’s case was closed by criminal order (without an oral hearing), they were sentenced to 60 days in jail. They pleaded guilty and other circumstances were taken into account. Ending proceedings with a criminal order usually results in a lighter sentence than if the same case had been heard at an oral hearing.
Later, the couple requested an oral hearing and began denying guilt in court.
Previously and now, the prosecutor’s office has requested a suspended sentence for the spouses. This means that if the Wielczynskas do not commit new serious crimes, they can avoid real arrest. The court will then decide on the punishment again.
“The prosecutor recommended that both be found guilty of the crimes they were charged with and that both be sentenced to 90 days in prison with a suspension of execution. Mindaugas Vilčinskas was recommended to have his execution postponed for one year, while Inga Vilčinskienei was recommended to have his execution postponed for 10 months, with the prosecutor requiring both to stay at home during specified times, continue to work or register with the employment service. The prosecutor also recommended that the court compel the person to participate in a special parenting program,” Tautvilė Merkevičiūtė, a representative of the Kaunas District Court, told Elta.
The court will announce its verdict on September 18.
ELTA reminds that less than a year ago, on July 18 in Kaunas, children aged 5, 7 and 9 were abducted from the “Pastogė” child welfare center. A few weeks later, it was reported that the border guards arrested the parents of Ingas and Mindaugas Vilczynskas, who abducted the young children near the Belarusian border, and handed the children over to temporary guardians. Law enforcement suspected that the parents tried to flee to Belarus after abducting the children. After the parents were arrested, the children were returned to foster families.
In January this year, the children were returned to their parents, considering that their parents had begun to accept the help provided by their parents.
The children were taken away from their parents by a court ruling in May. Considering that the children did not attend any educational institutions and their parents did not create social conditions for their children, the parents themselves also expressed that they did not recognize Lithuanian law.
As the State Security Ministry (VSD) announced earlier, the people who allegedly kidnapped their children in Kaunas attributed themselves to the “sovereignty” movement.
“Spouses who abduct children from temporary state care call themselves so-called ‘sovereigns’ who are guided by an anti-state extremist ideology that denies the legitimacy of the state. Those who claim to be sovereigns do not recognize the decisions of state institutions and are convinced that they may not be able to fulfil their civic obligations under the law,” the VSD declared.
