The third meeting of the annual consultation framework between the Ministry of Economy and Finance and members of the Anti-Corruption Commission (CAC) opened in Ouagadougou this Thursday, August 29, 2024. The opening ceremony was chaired by Sayuba Sawadogo, Head of the Office of the Minister of Economy and Finance.
The third meeting aims to take stock of anti-corruption actions in 2023 and determine future directions to strengthen transparency and integrity in public financial management.
In his opening speech, Sayuba Sawadogo stressed the importance of the fight against corruption, which he described as a serious threat to sustainable development and social security. He also noted that the fight is essential to eliminating the sources of terrorist financing and promoting sustainable development in Burkina Faso.
The Ministry of Economy has taken a number of initiatives in the fight against corruption, including strengthening internal controls, digitizing services, and establishing 25 anti-corruption committees. The mission of these committees is to promote integrity and honesty in economic and financial management institutions and to receive complaints and denunciations of service dysfunction.
“Great results were achieved in terms of awareness raising and complaint handling. We held 90 information and awareness sessions for more than 1,300 agents in both central and decentralized structures. In addition, 111 sessions were held for 8,394 users in seven regional capitals,” said Sayouba Sawadogo.
Despite these advances, the Chief of Staff called for continued vigilance and renewed resolve in the fight against corruption.
“Sincerity requires us to recognize that this phenomenon exists in our country, which is why we are taking a certain number of measures to effectively fight corruption. At the level of our department, the General Financial Inspection deploys personnel to the field through a certain number of content investigations. Therefore, we can say that our country is effectively leading the fight against corruption through the results achieved at the level of the General Financial Inspection. But we must never give up and we must not be complacent. We must recognize that this phenomenon still exists and we must always take action to fight this scourge,” he recalled.
To further improve the effectiveness of anti-corruption efforts, the ministry plans to add five new anti-corruption committees to the existing 25, so that there is one committee in each agency of the department.
During the ceremony, Isidore Timtore, Special Adviser to the President of Faso on Good Governance and the Fight against Corruption, presented the new whistleblower system established by the President. The 2023 report on the activities of the Anti-Corruption Commission was reviewed in order to assess the progress made and discuss future challenges in achieving zero tolerance for corruption.
