This is our second post about the Heritage Foundation’s (also known as Heritage) Project 2025. The plan would reshape the U.S. federal government if Donald Trump is elected to a second term in November. We recently wrote an introduction to Project 2025 and wanted to provide more details about this disturbing plan. Former President Trump recently announced at a campaign rally that Americans “won’t have to vote anymore” if he wins, signaling to many people what they feared was that Trump would attempt to “rig” the country’s competitive elections to make him or her the president of his or her party indefinitely. This statement, coupled with his authoritarian history, was alarming. Republicans downplayed the meaning of this statement, saying that this was not what Trump meant.
On December 7, 2023, Trump was asked if he was going to become a dictator, and he responded, “No, no, no, except for the first day. “We’re going to close the border, and we’re going to drill, drill, drill.” Let’s not forget Trump’s efforts to overturn the last fair presidential election, which he still insists he won. This action led to the attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, which was arguably an act of violence aimed at overturning the results of the last presidential election. The only thing scarier than a madman is a madman with a plan. Project 2025 is exactly that plan.
Our understanding of this divisive plan is to reshape the U.S. federal government, giving the executive branch greater power. The plan aims to replace tens of thousands of government employees with Trump loyalists who are more willing to implement Trump policies outlined in the “2025 Plan.” The idea is to steer our current model of government toward greater dictatorship. Our current model of government with built-in safeguards prevented Trump from overturning the last election.
In the last election, after Trump lost the crucial state of Georgia, he called an election official and said, “All I want to do is: I just want to find 11,780 votes,” he continued, “and there’s nothing wrong with saying that, you know what, you’ve already recounted it.” Trump is currently under impeachment in Georgia for criminal activity to overturn the state’s democratic electoral process. If the 2025 plan is implemented, Trump will call the loyalists that Trump has already appointed, and this call may have a different result. If we are curious about what the 2025 plan would look like after it is implemented, we can only look to recent historical events to see how history might have changed.
People come to the United States not only to make a better life for themselves, but for their children and grandchildren. This is the American way of life. This is why we see many first generation immigrants become hardworking workers and their children and grandchildren become college graduates, doctors, lawyers, engineers, and many other types of professionals and entrepreneurs. Project 2025 seeks to end the legal status of 500,000 DACA recipients. Using U.S. federal financial aid programs to pressure American universities to not allow immigrant groups to attend their schools. Project 2025 seeks to restrict access to the U.S. education system for the next generation. Project 2025 seeks to suspend annual eligibility for H-2A and H-2B temporary worker visas, a group of people who work in essential jobs in agriculture, hospitality, construction, and forestry. This agenda diverges from traditional conservative values, which promote assimilation and education of young people.
The Democratic and Republican candidates in the U.S. presidential election have historically held opposing views on many issues in the United States, including the economy and even immigration. However, the agenda laid out in the “2025 Plan” is an extremist vision of an America that is radically different from the one we live in today. That’s why this year’s election may be the most important in the country’s history.
