Lamy police are investigating two reports where dried leaves suspected to be cannabis were allegedly found on prisoners yesterday.
Assistant Commissioner of Police – Operations (ACP) Livai Driu said the first report involved a 35-year-old prisoner who was escorted by Fiji Correctional Services officers to the Lami Health Centre for a dental check-up.
He said officers noticed a man acting suspiciously and a short time later, allegedly saw the suspect picking up items in the hallway.
ACP Driu said upon interrogation, the suspect voluntarily surrendered several bags of suspected dried marijuana leaves wrapped in aluminium foil.
In the second report, a prison officer found an item that appeared to have been thrown into the prison while on duty at Naborough Prison.
The prison searched five inmates working outside and allegedly found several bags of dried leaves suspected to be marijuana on a 29-year-old inmate.
All seized substances have been sent for analysis.
ACP Driu acknowledged the continuous efforts of the Fiji Correctional Service to curb drug related activities, saying that this contributes to the overall goal of reducing drug supply and harm.
“There has been overwhelming support for efforts to tackle the illegal drug trade and this should serve as a warning to those involved that you will be caught.”
